STEPHEN GLASSBOROW AUSTRALIAN CERAMIC POTTERY LAMP BASE SCULPTURE ART DECO LADY. GALLERY QUALITY EXAMPLE OF STEPHEN GLASSBOROW ARTWORK. Presenting an exquisite Australian ceramic figural lamp base produced and signed by the renowned artist Stephen Glassborow.
This exceptionally attractive piece is number 41 in a limited edition of 99 and depicts a tall, slender female figure modelled in an appealing Art Deco style. The elegant bare breasted lady uplifts her beautifully modelled face, her arms reaching towards her wonderfully detailled unfolding wings. The woman's naturalistically modelled torso rises out of a stylised Art Deco inspired column which looks rather like an ornately carved corbel used as an architectural feature on a Roman building.
Organic scrolled details adorn the womans thighs and the stylishly shaped base of the lamp. This wonderfully sculptural ceramic form has been finished in a matte glaze which simulates the aged patina of verdigris metal. The sleek, sweeping clean lines combined with the womans uplifted wings add a fabulous sense of movement to this beautifully designed and masterfully hand crafted piece! This stunning example is presented in excellent condition with no breaks, losses or repairs.
There is one tiny fleabite sized nibble to the top rim which would most likely be concealed with the addition of a lamp fitting. There is a tiny scuff to the patina finish at the lower back left side of the base, noticeable only on close examination but mentioned for complete accuracy. This exquisite piece has been very well cared for and presents spectacularly. This piece needs to be rewired if it is to function as a lamp, allowing the new owner to add their own desired fitting.
There is a hole to the reverse to accommodate the lamp cord and a threaded metal pipe protruding from the top. The base of the lamp is covered in black vinyl leather to protect the surface of your furniture. This exceptionally impressive gallery quality piece stands 460mms tall. The base measures 190mms x 175mms in diameter. This piece weighs just over 1.9kgs unpackaged.
This piece is beautifully signed and numbered with the artists' inscribed signature "41/99 Glassborow". Stephen was born in Hammersmith and studied painting in Newcastle and sculpture at Brighton College of Art before moving to Australia in the early 1980s. While studying, Stephen developed a fascination for the more physical demands of sculpture. By the time he arrived down under, he was committed to it. His chosen medium was clay; his chosen subject the human form.
Eventually, Stephen took a leap and became a full time artist working in bronze. He has had great success across Asia Pacific, the US and the UK, and has held over 70 one man shows.
He is also in demand for public work. Today, his pieces can be seen in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao, Shanghai and Seoul. He has two winged sculptures on display outside the Sheraton on the Park Hotel in Sydney.
Glassborow work is represented in significant international and Australian public collections. Emphatically playful and frequently deriving their inspiration from phrases of popular culture, one can recognize the influence of Art Deco and Greco Roman figurative sculpture in Stephens work however, Stephen Glassborow retains a very contemporary perspective. This stunning piece would make an exquisite artistic feature in any well designed home and a superb addition to any Australian art collection!
