Vintage CB Masten Auman Pottery Vase Description and Item Information Up for sale is this rare example of southern art pottery. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This vintage, handturned vase stands approximately 4 7/8 inches tall, and it has a maximum width of about 4 3/4 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 15.1 ounces.

This pot has a textured salt glaze which is blue with some dark areas of greenish black. Throwing rings are evident to the interior. This vintage vase will be an uncommon addition to a collection of American art pottery or North Carolina folk art. Identification This piece is unsigned, but it is attributed to Auman Pottery with a C. Much interesting information regarding C.

Masten and Auman Pottery can be found in A. Everette James' North Carolina Art Pottery reference, some of which I'll paraphrase here. Auman pottery (1922 - 1937), was a transitional (from utilitarian wares to artwares) Seagrove area kiln run by Charlie R.

Masten studied at Alfred University under Charles Fergus Binns, and from there he went to Seagrove and worked at Auman pottery. His pieces are rarely marked, but they can be attributed to him based on his distinctive glazing style. Condition The vase looks great overall, with fine, unstained crazing, and no chips or cracks. Variations in and glazing are as made. Some areas of the glaze feel rough to the touch, as made.

There are a few small, glazed-over indentations to the sides, as made. As made, there is a tiny notch / grinding mark / kiln stilt mark to the edge of the base. Payments must be received within three days of the end of the listing, unless prior arrangements have been made.
