RARE MASTER ARTIST JAFAR SHOJA DYSFUNCTIONAL TEAPOT SCULPTURE GLAZED POTTERY. Iranian artist, Jafar Shoja, and his Dysfunctional Teapots. Nov/Dec 2007 He has worked with numerous other mediums in his seventy plus years. Clay is his latest and favorite.
His pieces indeed look like extremely elaborate and fanciful teapots, but they have no functional parts. The spouts are solid and have no openings. Because of the fragility of the elaborate handles and spouts, Shoja mixes his clay with 5% paper to increase its strength and decrease the likely hood of breakage.Apparently the paper burns way in the kiln, leaving the clay more porous for better glaze absorption. Shoja also aerates the clay by poking it with a cobblers spike and monitors his pieces carefully to ensure uniform drying. He keeps he pieces covered with plastic for weeks so they dont dry out too quickly and crack.
