Born 1941 Nancy Jurs trained in traditional pottery with Frans Wildenhain and Hobart Cowles this piece was in the collection of H. Cowles at Rochester, NY's School for American Craftsmen / Rochester Institute of Technology.Nancy spent the first fifteen years of her artistic career creating functional raku works. In 1980 she began to expand the parameters of her ceramics, creating functional wall shelves , or "wall pouches, " some that suggested butterflies or female forms. Post 9/11 her figures transformed into her ongoing Armor Series. My work is about women in emergence.
Her emotionally expressive clay shapes are hand-built or wheel-thrown and are glazed, painted with acrylics, or finished with any combination of techniques that appeals to the artist. Today, working in her Scottsville, NY studio Nancy Jurs creates a variety of narrative themes and materials, Jurs is one of the nations foremost sculptors.
She has works in the collection of many museums including the Smithsonian Institution , the Museum of Art and Design , and the Memorial Art Gallery.
