Tomas lives in a neighboring village to Mata Ortiz, his daughter lives in Mata Ortiz. Tomas has for many years been an admirer of the work of the potters. On his own he has developed a special kind of effigies that are inspired by the Mata Ortiz designs.
He has developed a unique rough-primitive style of painting and barely sanded extremely well-formed effigy figures. As you are viewing this piece imagine what goes into every aspect of totally hand making every effigy. So much amazing talent is needed to create this piece, and he is totally self-taught. This piece is 100% handmade - hand painted and carved in the coil pinch method.

MATA ORTIZ POTTERY STORY: Is a recreation of the Mogollon pottery found in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquime') in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it.
