MEDIUM HIGHLY POLISHED WHITE CLAY TRADITIONAL MATA ORTIZ POTTERY BY WORLD FAMOUS FIRST GENERATION MASTER POTTER LYDIA QUEZADA GORGEOUS TRADITIONAL YET MODERN APPEAL FROM ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED OF THE FIRST GENERATION OF MATA ORTIZ POTTERS. Lydia Quezada is the youngest of Juan Quezada's siblings, and considered by many to be one of, if not THE most talented of her famous family. She is well known for her leading edge experimentation among the first generation of Mata Ortiz potters. Lydia perfected the black on black pottery technique.

Her version is quite exciting, in that it combines both matte finishes, with perfectly polished high shine black surfaces, using the reduction firing method. The combination of the paint against the matte and polished black pottery is just stunning! Then throw in the fact that Lydia hand forms her pottery without the use of a potter's wheel, burnishes/polishes with an agate stone, makes her own natural paint, and paints her pottery with a homemade paint brush using long strands of human hair.....

And you have a true masterpiece! This particular piece is a a gorgeous departure from the black on black technique that Lydia usually adheres to! And we love it when she ventures into other clay colors and forms. We asked Lydia to create one of her white clay pots in a medium, more affordable price range to share with our customers.

Lydia said that she was quite pleased with the results, using more red paint on this piece than she normally had used in the past. The contrast gives this piece great quality aesthetically, and the form is gorgeously crafted.

A nod to traditions, yet done in a very elegant and modern form. Lydia is one of only a few of the original master potters that are actively creating Mata Ortiz pottery. Her husband Rito Talavera just sadly lost his eyesight, and Lydia continues to struggle with problems with her own eyesight.

The painting of Mata Ortiz pottery is quite difficult on the eyes, and many of the original potters have stopped actively producing artwork as a result. The day that Lydia stops making pots will be a huge loss for the Mata Ortiz community, as she is a living legend! Approximate Measurements: 8 1/4" high x 5 1/2" wide (17 in circumference at the widest point).
