Jewelry: 1910 - 1939 Art Deco. Antique Thomas Jerome Wheatley Art Pottery Bronze Figural Bat Base Lamp 1880 RARE. Antique 1880 Thomas Jerome Wheatley Art Pottery Lamp on Bronze Figural Bat Base. Originally starting existence as an oil-lamp, the bronze base base seems to be made by known New York merchant G. It is original and was made for the Wheatley pottery top.
The craftsmanship and form is top notch. Showing a total of four bats standing on thick, rolled-style footing, each figure is seen with fully extended wings, prominent facial features and ears, a thin tail, and additional "fingers".Completely hand painted, the vase is decorated in an Orientalist style, showing Chinese dogwood flower sprays and accompanying vines/foliage working their way around the octagonal base. The painted decoration is slightly raised and felt with the touch, and blends shades of green, brown and yellow over the dark green/black and white diagonally-striped ground. Similar to Haviland Limoges pottery in painting technique.
Signed on unfinished base with mold number No. 89" and "TJW & Co. Measures a total of 24 High to top of harp.
Bottom base section measures approximately 10" High x 5 1/2" Wide. Condition: Good to very good. Incredible condition for it's age and rarity!
Minimal damage to the pottery: allover crazing, faint speck-sized glaze imperfections, and a tight kiln firing line, line near the top recess , near the rim. (not through on both sides, may just be the glaze, picture). The bronze bottom was finished in dark black paint or finish and shows age-related surface wear, nicks, fading and white oxidation. One of the bat-foots is slightly stretched and "kicked out", creating a little bit of give if significant downward force is put on the lamp, however the is still well-supported and largely stable. The lamp's removable top section shows similar metal-wear and will need to be re-wired for use, or pull it out and it will be an oil lamp again!
