Here is a pair of rare Mary Watts' Compton Pottery male archer painted plaster ceramic bookends dating from the 1920s. They are beautifully modelled and coloured and are a lovely example of work produced at Compton. Mary Watts was married to George Frederic Watts, a renowned Victorian painter. The Compton Potters' Arts Guild was set up to encourage a revival in handcraftsmanship during the Arts and Crafts period. The Watts were friends with some of the leading figures in the Arts and Crafts and Pre-Raphaelite movements, including Walter Crane and William de Morgan. Each bookend measures 7" inches wide by 7.5" inches high. They are both in good overall condition with some light wear in places to both. Please see all the photos to assess the condition of each bookend and zoom in for details.
