Dated 1873 Is this the earliest known example of Zsolnay's Eosin glaze? Organic bulbous vessel with nouveau leaf handles. They designed 845 different forms during this nine year period so form 59 would date to that first year of 1873, the year of the World Exhibition in Vienna. It's also hand marked with the roman numeral. And a hand inscribed 35? Or possibly the initials of the artist? Zsolnay didn't introduce his Eosin glaze until 1893 yet here it is on a piece some 20yrs earlier. Note that the interior is also green and that the green looks like Loetz glass. We believe this was an attempt to recreate a piece of metal mounted Bohemian art glass and they were hoping the red would fire to resemble bronze or silver. We give an example in our series of photos above and you can google. For "mounted green loetz" for many more examples. Another great search is "mounted Zsolnay".

Were they attempting to avoid the costly last step of having their pieces metal-mounted? Beautiful as it is: it was created two full decades before they introduced the Eosin glaze, almost confirming that this was an early experimental test piece. Because they didn't get the desired effect did they mark it. And sell it as a 2nd? This piece should not exist!

Wonderful condition (near mint) with a few very light surface scuffs, visible when you move it back & forth under a light. Stands just under 10" tall (9 3/4"). A five pound sterling silver " Bug Basket " from Buckingham Palace, the most-prized possession of the last reigning monarch of The Kingdom of Hawai'i, an artifact from The White House and Porcellian Club (the birthplace of Facebook), the first man to the moon's 1st appearance in Space, an authentic Witch coven's serving charger and an 1885 New York City "Sitting Bull" Cigar Store Indian are but a few of our most interesting pieces.
