The contrast of the stark, rough matt surface of the background with the rich glossy blue emphasises the foals elegance and innocent charm, giving it a sort. Mid-century art from Germany, Ulm.

Possibly dating back to the 60's or 70's. No chips or cracks or unpleasant odours. There is some minor crazing to the blue glaze of the horse which is normal for an item of this age and high-gloss glazes such as this (see photos).

There is one burst glaze bubble near the nose of the horse which occurred during the manufacturing process but this is not very noticeable as it is completely. Blue inside (see image 3). The background glaze has a matt glaze in a muted plum / burgundy colour. The colour of the foal is a gorgeous dark blue with turquoise highlights. The edges of the wall plaque are black with a matt finish. Incised signature at the bottom left corner. Marked on the back with the Schaffenacker studio stamp (no form number). There is also an old shop or gallery sticker attached to the back which was based in the German city Brunswick / Braunschweig. This is a must for any keen Schaffenacker collector as it's one of the most tender and evocative examples of his wall plaques... In the past 5 years that I've been collecting, I have only ever come across the same Shaffenacker design two other times, but the glaze and colours were not. Half as nice as this one.
